For ages Donkerbroek has been a so-called lintdorp [ribbon village], an elongated village built along one through road. The most important route running through the village is Herenweg. In the past traffic speeds were far too high. The asphalt road at that time presented the motorist with every opportunity for such driving. The corporation, who wanted to improve the quality of life in the village by reconstructing this road, had at this point in time realised the importance of working together with the inhabitants on a broadly accepted plan.
At Donkerbroek they have managed to do so very successfully. The residents got an important say in the matter; the corporation even went around with a coach full of ladies to look around and choose the colours of the clinker bricks. The residents chose for a colourful street. The trend in the mid-90s was that everything should be done up in bright colours originating from the idea that gay colours would brighten up the living environment. In itself Donkerbroek could do with some brightening up, the architecture in the village is not spectacular but with hindsight you might say that the road is altogether rather prominently present.
