Ten years ago the village of Nijega still had a direct link from the village to the nearby N31 dual carriageway. As a consequence 6.000 cars sped through the village on a daily basis. Starting from an integrated vision on the village it was decided to remove this bypass and to use the space that became available as a result to improve the quality of life and enhance the village character.
From an integrated vision a plan was made then in which the use of water also got a prominent place. Because of this integrated approach it was possible to give the entire village a facelift with money that was available as part of regular maintenance. The bypass was removed. In other places asphalt was replaced by clinker bricks. The harbour, which over the years had disappeared from sight, was made visible again. The crossroads near the harbour was remade as a village square. In the place where the bypass used to be a village community centre was built. At present there are plans to use the remainder of the space that has become available for the laying out of a nice village green.
The village is a village again, a place to be around. The motorist understands - and this is different from the old situation - that he is entering a village and should adapt his driving conduct to the people that are around here.
