Two decades ago the road that runs right through the centre of Opeinde was a thoroughfare and owned by the central government. This road lost its function of thoroughfare when the N31 dual carriageway Leeuwarden - Drachten was built, which curved round Opeinde. The road through the village became municipal property but it kept a width that would have been the envy of many a motorway. To ease the worst pain the former national road was narrowed by putting so-called "pig's backs" along the sides of the road. By means of speed bumps it was tried to curb the speed of the traffic. But to through traffic the road remained an attractive alternative: every 24 hours 4.500 cars forced their way through the village often at considerable speed. The inhabitants demanded more structural measures from the corporation.
The plan that was made then comprised a total renovation of Opeindes built-up area. In this renovation of Opeinde a fair amount of motorised traffic had to be taken into account even though this traffic intensity would be reduced somewhat by the renovation. Opeinde experienced an enormous metamorphosis. The width of the road - about 12 metres - was brought down to half of that and on either side of the bridge the asphalt was replaced by clinker bricks. The old straight road was turned into a more winding one. Trees were planted and many vertical elements erected. There is now a work of art in the centre of the village referring to the former drawbridge. Opeinde has had a real village street since the renovation.
