Before the reconstruction in 2000/2001 traffic at this crossroads was controlled by means of traffic lights. As the municipality of Smallingerland had decided to remove traffic lights wherever possible in Drachten a plan was made for the reconstruction of this crossroads.
That was not simple. The Kaden - Torenstraat crossroads is a place that spatially has quite a story to tell with its church, the old tobacco factory and the quay-side along the now filled in canal. Close by are a lot of shops, bars and restaurants and the place is part of a busy public transport link. At the reconstruction it was tried to turn this place so full of traffic into a meeting place. And one has managed to do so quite successfully. The traffic lights have been removed. Spatially the church has got a more prominent place. Asphalt has been replaced by clinker bricks. The crossroads has not become quieter, busier rather but without explicit rules and regulations on priority 17,000 vehicles, tens of buses and 2,000 cyclists find their way here daily.
